Bobby S. Korn, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Division of Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was awarded the 2007 Marvin H. Quickert Thesis Award by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) at the society’s annual fall scientific symposium. ASOPRS is the leading medical society for Dr. Korn’s speciality and membership in this prestigious society requires training in an ASOPRS approved fellowship as well as passing a rigorous written and oral examination. The Marvin H. Quickert Thesis Award is presented to the individual for the most outstanding thesis chosen from those submitted by candidates seeking membership in the ASOPRS. Dr. Korn’s thesis was entitled: “Human Orbital Adipose Tissue: A Source of Pluripotential Adult Stem Cells.” In this study, Dr. Korn and his colleagues were the first to identify adult stem cells residing within the adipose tissue of the orbit. Their discovery opens up new avenues of research for ophthalmic diseases using stem cells obtained from adult and not embryonic tissues. |
